2. project background

It is now 5 years since the need has been identified for a children and disabled persons facility in central Edinburgh. A committee, as noted below, has been assembled with the object of taking forward the project to a successful conclusion.

The key points of the project to date are as follows:

  • Planning consent to build the 12 hole course was received on the 15th of September 2001 after 4 years of effort by those behind the project.
  • As is normal with a project such as this it is a "not for profit" Charity with all monies resulting from the trading of the project being ploughed back into the project.
  • Children and disabled persons will pay between £3 and £4 to play one round over the 12 hole golf course.
  • The Project is supported by Sport Scotland, Edinburgh Council, the Royal and Ancient of St Andrews and the Scottish Golf Union.
  • In addition to catering for golf, the educational facility to be built on the site will provide information on the local heritage and ecology.
  • The City of Edinburgh, Schools Education Department (SED) have confirmed the facility shall be used where ever possible by all Edinburgh Schools. The schools shall be encouraged by the SED to include such activities in the curriculum.
  • Walkers and joggers will be able to utilize boundary paths to be constructed adjacent to the fence line around the course.

What will the Children and Disabled Persons golf course offer that is not already available elsewhere in Edinburgh ?

  • It will offer the young and disabled the opportunity to experience the fun of golf.
  • A suitable and safe environment for the young (5-12 age group) and the disabled to participate in golf. Currently there are no golf facilities in Edinburgh where the young or the disabled can experience golf. Edinburgh Golf clubs do not allow children under 12 to play golf unless accompanied and only at limited times.
  • A golf course designed specifically with the young and disabled in mind.
  • Social inclusion for the under priveledged and disabled.
  • Offers an outdoor experience leading to an appreciation of the environment.
  • A Pathway to full Golf Club Membership.
